Mission
The site of our Legion is on the hallowed grounds where the brave Maryland 400 (and other American revolutionaries) fought in the Battle of Long Island in 1776. The Marylanders are remembered for having fought a delaying action against the larger British army to cover the retreat of the American forces from Brooklyn.
Two hundred fifty-six of the Marylanders from this battle were buried near Third Avenue and 9th Street near the present-day American Legion post.
Of the approx-12K Posts that exist, ours is uniquely situated on the very grounds of the first battle of the United States of America.
In 1776, here in Brooklyn, the bravery of many patriots, far from their homes, made the ultimate sacrifice that enabled our country to exist today.
We are honored to be custodians of this historic site, and it is our mission to serve the veterans of today and remember those who fought here all those years ago.
